Scott Friedberg, MD

Dr. Scott Friedberg has always been interested in nutrition and all things gut health. Early on in his life, through volunteering in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Nepal, he also realized a passion for helping and connecting with others. Together, these naturally led him to enter a career in gastroenterology.

Today, Dr. Friedberg considers it a privilege to be able to listen to patients’ concerns and gain their trust. He and his patients work as a team to develop a personalized strategy that makes sense not only medically but for his patients’ lifestyles too. Seeing his patients’ conditions improve is his favorite part of the job.

Dr. Friedberg is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist and inflammatory bowel disease specialist with particular interest in the following:

  • General GI care
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

After graduating with honors from the University of Virginia, Dr. Friedberg moved to Israel and later earned his medical degree from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, graduating as the salutatorian. He completed residency at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Friedberg has a subspecialization in IBD and trained at the University of Chicago’s world-renowned IBD Center where he routinely treated some of the most challenging cases in the country using novel and creative approaches. There and through additional experiences in Japan, he has also developed expertise in performing intestinal ultrasound (IUS), an emerging modality to monitor IBD noninvasively, in the office, and without any bowel preparation or radiation.

He has written IBD-related book chapters, taught medical school classes, and led studies on novel medications, including a pioneering study on upadacitinib, the first FDA-approved oral treatment for severe Crohn’s disease. His research has been presented at numerous national and international conferences, as well as featured in top news outlets.

Outside the office, Dr. Friedberg enjoys learning about other cultures, especially through travel. He keeps active by running, biking, playing basketball and tennis, and hiking. He also likes trying new foods and is always open to hearing new restaurant recommendations.
